Women in Finance: Addressing the Gender Short in Financial Services & Investment Management Panel Discussion
Essex House, New York City

Franklin Templeton held a panel discussion, Women in Finance: Addressing the Big Gender Short in Financial Services and Investment Management. It was well attended by attendees of F.T.’s larger conference, Global Investment Forum 2022Katrina Dudley, a Franklin Templeton Portfolio Manager and RTSWS lead volunteer, is the co-author of the book that prompted this special event.
Maura Cunnigham, RTSWS CEO & Founder, kicked off the panel discussion by suggesting that if the financial services industry wants to recruit more women into the profession, they are waiting too long by approaching them at the college level. Instead, young women need to be recruited at an earlier age – in high school as girls in the U.S. fall out of math early.
Maura then thanked Franklin Templeton for its long-standing support of RTSWS student cohorts in Newark, NJ, and San Mateo, CA.
Three of our NYC Student CEOs were guests of F.T. at the event and had an incredible opportunity to hear from the featured speakers, network with female financial professionals, and even met the former President of the New York Stock Exchange, Stacey Cunningham

Jenny Johnson, President and Chief Executive Officer, Franklin Resources, Inc.

Austin, TX

The RTSWS panel, “Changing Girls’ Mindsets on Financial Education,” was selected to be part of SXSW EDU’s diverse lineup of experienced speakers, interactive sessions, hands-on workshops, and learning experiences aimed at fostering discovery for a variety of education stakeholders.

Speakers on the panel include Maura Cunningham, CEO and Founder of RTSWS, Nashville, TN; Kellie Schonberg, Global Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at Invesco, Atlanta, GA; and Harvey Blumm, Internship Coordinator at Stuyvesant High School, New York, NY. They discussed the “why” of our programming and how to successfully launch a RTSWS chapter utilizing a private/public partnership in your city.

About the “Changing Girls’ Mindsets on Financial Education” Panel

Improving girls’ financial education and literacy in high school is critical to changing America’s gender wage and wealth inequalities, the college debt crisis (which disproportionately affects women), and creating a more diverse financial industry. We must teach girls to be fiscally confident by familiarizing them with financial terms, exposing them to female role models, teaching them about investing (not just budgets), and opening their eyes to how finance affects their lives.

About SXSW EDU

SXSW EDU is most well known for the SXSW EDU Conference & Festival, an annual event that fosters innovation and learning within the education industry. The SXSW EDU Conference & Festival takes place each March in Austin, TX as a four-day event offering compelling sessions, in-depth workshops, engaging learning experiences, mentorship, film screenings, future-focused competitions, an expo, networking opportunities, and so much more.
